Letter From the Chair

June 5, 2014

Dear Colleagues,

When a patient or colleague takes the time to send a note of appreciation about the wonderful care they have received at Emory, it leaves a long-lasting smile on my face. Last week, I opened a letter from a gentleman who traveled from the Northeast to bring his wife to Emory Radiology for image-guided treatment of a spine lesion. His gratitude leaped off the paper: “We came to Atlanta in a wheelchair and left walking to the plane…”  The alternative for this patient was major surgery with a long rehabilitation period to follow. Another grateful patient communicated: “I see why Emory is a well known leader in the medical field. You hire the best people for the job. They are caring, understanding and most of all, its evident they love what they do.”

As you well know, our staff and faculty work very hard to promote excellent patient care, develop innovative new imaging techniques, and to educate the future stars of our field. Our culture of service excellence is apparent in all of it and our patients have noticed – again and again.

It has been a busy spring in all parts of our Department. We have worked together to launch our transition to integrate Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital into our Department, collaborated with Children’s Hospital to offer pediatric imaging research support at the Emory Center for Systems Imaging, and designing a patient-friendly waiting area for Emory University Hospital. Our shared commitment to those we serve propels us to accomplish so much more than what each of us might achieve alone.

Best always,
Carolyn C. Meltzer, MD, FACR
Chair of Radiology and Imaging Sciences
