Clinical Divisions - Breast Imaging

Breast Imaging is comprised of six faculty and up to three fellows, who work together to accomplish the goals of research, education and clinical excellence. This division is active within the community, presenting information at various locations to facilitate education and awareness. The education provided is firmly based in the daily care given in the comforting setting of the Breast Imaging Center (BIC), located in the Emory Winship Cancer Institute, and also at The Emory Clinic at 1525 Clifton Road and at the Emory Midtown campus. The BIC research recently completed a study on steroscopic digital mammography, which provides a more accurate method of detecting breast cancers. With the participation of nearly 1,500 women, this study suggested that this method may reduce false-positives by 49 percent. Other benefits of this new technology include identifying lesions may be commonly missed in standard mammography and depicting cluster calcifications that can be associated with malignancy. Researchers have been encouraged by the promising results of this study and plan to continue development of this technology for clinical use. Emory's Breast Imaging Center is one of only three sites in the world to have a dedicated breast CT unit and will be conducting research on this exciting technology for breast cancer detection.

Stereoscopic Digital Mammography

March 2008
The study Stereoscopic Digital Mammography has received national coverage since the RSNA press conference last November. At the conclusion of the study last December, the Breast Imaging Center (BIC) had evaluated of nearly 1,500 women. The study is considered a success with the final results proving to reduce false-positives by 49 percent. Today the coverage continues, as the public anticipates the next stage to move this advancement to clinical use. Click here, to view the most recent television coverage.

November 2007
Dr. Carl D'Orsi, along with his colleague Dr. David Getty of BBN Technologies at Cambridge, Mass., participated in a 2007 RSNA press conference to discuss their advances with Stereoscopic Digital Mammography.  This very successful discussion produced international media coverage on this topic, which can be found on various websites including US News & World Report, CBS and WebMD, to name a few.  This coverage prompted an interview by Atlanta Jounal-Constitution (AJC) reporter Ken Foskett, which will appear as an article in an upcoming issue of the AJC.
