The faculty of the Emory Division of Nuclear Medicine & Molecular Imaging offers the highest quality patient care, incorporating the latest knowledge, innovation and equipment. Nuclear Medicine not only uses the most advanced methods, but also helps set the bar for the field. All of the physicians are boardpcertified in nuclear medicine, and some are double-boarded in other fields, particulary Radiology; many have national and international reputations in their fields.
Equipment includes PET/CT and SPECT/CT scanners at Emory University Hospital (Druid Hills campus), and Emory University Hospital Midtown. We offer a wide variety of specialized nuclear medicine therapies including that for thyroid cancer, bone cancer pain palliation, lymphoma, neuroendocrine tumors and
Y-90 liver therapy in cooperation with Interventional Radiology. Research devices at our disposal include one of the few PET-MR units in the world, a high-resolution brain PET scanner, micro-PET for animal research, and a research cyclotron. A full range of nuclear medicine and PET/CT services are also provided at Grady Memorial Hospital and the Atlanta VA Medical Center. The Division is integrally involved in research conducted by the Emory University School of Medicine faculty, including close collaboration with colleagues in radiology and cardiology and at the Emory Winship Cancer Institute. Our faculty are principal investigators and co-investigators on many research grants including those sponsored by the NIH.

Top Atlanta Doctors
The Best Doctors in America database includes the names and professional profiles of approximately 45,000 of the best doctors in the United States. An exhaustive peer-review by thousands of doctors determines the physicians included in the database. Only those who earn the consensus support of their peers, as well as meet additional qualification criteria are included. For this reason, inclusion in the Best Doctors in America database is a remarkable honor!

Triple Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Nuclear Medicine Laboratories (ICANL) Certification
The Emory Division of Nuclear Medicine has received ICANL accreditation in the areas of General Nuclear Medicine, Positron Emission Tomography (PET), and Nuclear Cardiology. These accreditations are evidence of the effectiveness in which Emory Nuclear Medicine utilizes their facilities to diagnose coronary heart disease, evaluate kidney and bladder functions, and detect the presence of cardiovascular disease.
With a long tradition of excellence in Nuclear Cardiology, the Emory University Hospital, Department of Radiology, Division of Nuclear Medicine was one of the first 5 laboratories nationwide to receive ICANL accreditation for Nuclear Cardiology in November of 1998. The standards applied by ICANL for Nuclear Cardiology are based on the Guidelines and Standards published by the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology. Several Emory Radiology names are prominent in the authorship of these guidelines, including Ji Chen, Ph.D.; C. David Cooke, MSEE; Russell Folks,CNMT; James R. Galt, Ph.D.; and Ernest V. Garcia, Ph.D.
EUH Nuclear Medicine achieved comprehensive ICANL accreditation in 2005, expanding the accreditation to include General Nuclear Medicine (including Nuclear Medicine Therapy) and Positron Emission Tomography. The laboratory remains the only one in Georgia with ICANL accreditation in all 3 areas (Nuclear Cardiology, General Nuclear Medicine, and Positron Emission Tomography).
Best Paper
Drs. June Zhu Hongyun and Raghuver Halkar collaborated on the paper "Predicting treatment outcome from mid-treatment response in pediatric lymphoma: is there an appropriate measure of response?" which has earned the recognition of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM). The EANM received 1,596 abstract submissions from around the world. This paper will be featured at the upcoming EANM Congress to be held in Munich, Germany.
Best Clinical Investigation Paper
David Schuster, MD
Director, Division of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging
Dr. David Schuster is being honored for one of the three best clinical investigation papers at this year's Society of Nuclear Medicine annual meeting. The Journal of Nuclear Medicine editorial board will present Dr. Schuster with an award for his manuscript titled, "Initial Experience with the Radiotracer anti 1- amino-3- [18F]fluorocyclobutane-1-carboxylic acid (anti-[18F]FACBC) with PET/CT in Prostate Carcinoma." This article was also featured on the cover of the January 2007 issue of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine. Other Emory faculty who contributed to this article include Drs. John Votaw, Weiping Yu, Johnathan Nye and Mark Goodman.
Society of Nuclear Medicine (SNM) Press Conference
In May, Fellow, Dr. Cesar Santana was one of only six selected to participate in the press conference held during the SNM annual meeting. Dr. Santana presented a study to develop advanced a three-dimensional imaging of the heart. This cutting-edge technique inspired the interest of the Washington Post and was recognized in its June 7, 2007 issue. Click here to iew the article.
2007 Distinguished Scientist Award
The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), section of Radiological Pathology, has selected Dr. Naomi Alazraki for the 2007 Distinguished Scientist Award. She will spend 6 months at the AFIP on the campus of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C., which began in July 2007. During this time Dr. Alazraki will study radiologic-pathologic correlation and integrate the understanding of the pathologic basis of disease with her teaching and research interests. She will also participate in the lecture schedule for the resident courses given at the AFIP.
