Abdominal Imaging
DIRECTOR: Deborah A. Baumgarten, M.D., M.P.H., Associate Professor of Radiology
PROGRAM: The Department of Radiology, Emory University School of Medicine offers a one-year accredited fellowship position in Abdominal Imaging. The fellowship includes training and experience in all aspects of Abdominal Radiology including CT, abdominal/pelvic and vascular sonography, abdominal/pelvic MRI and peripheral MRA, fluoroscopy and image-guided biopsy and abscess drainages. Participation in ongoing research is encouraged and supported. The program strives to prepare individuals for an academic or specialized private practice career. The program is accredited by the ACGME.
FACULTY AND EQUIPMENT: There are 9 full-time and 5 part-time faculty members in the Division of Abdominal Imaging. The fellowship utilizes Emory University Hospital, Grady Memorial Hospital and The Emory Clinic. Equipment includes nine multislice CT scanners (a combination of GE and Philips equipment). There are five superconducting 1.5 Tesla MRI units and a 3 Tesla magnet. There are 11 state-of-the-art ultrasound rooms. The section uses eight digital fluoroscopic rooms. A Siemens PACS unit is in place at Emory Hospital and the Emory Clinic (with plans to change to a new system this year). A Philips I-Site system is in place for Ultrasound, CT and MRI at Grady.
PATIENT POPULATION: There is a large diversity in the group of patients seen at the Emory University Health System. There is a large well-established transplantation service (liver, kidney, pancreas and bone marrow) at the Emory University Hospital. The division of Abdominal Imaging is routinely involved in both preoperative and postoperative evaluation of these patients. There is extensive experience with medical and surgical oncology, hepatobiliary, pancreatic and urological pathology. In addition, there is a busy emergency department at Grady Memorial Hospital where there is extensive exposure to abdominal/pelvic trauma and common illnesses in the outpatient setting. In addition, both the Emory Clinic and Grady Hospital have opened dedicated Cancer Centers.
FLUOROSCOPY: Fellows will receive training in routine barium studies as well as fistulograms, defecography and ERCP interpretation.
SONOGRAPHY: There are eleven state-of-the-art GE and Acuson ultrasound units throughout the division. Extensive experience is provided in abdominal and pelvic sonography. Gynecological ultrasound comprises the vast majority of pelvic sonography and includes training in hysterosonography. Training in OB/US is available if requested. Extensive experience with all aspects of vascular ultrasound is provided. These include training in color Doppler sonography of the carotid arteries, transplant sonography, abdominal Doppler, and peripheral vascular sonography. In addition, there has been increasing use of intra-operative sonography, mostly for hepatic resection. The Division of Abdominal Imaging collaborates with the hepatic surgeons in cases of hepatic resection, Radiofrequency ablation and cryosurgery.
CT: State-of-the-art multi-detector spiral CT is performed at all facilities. Fellows will receive training in multi-slice CT and CT angiography as well as 2 and 3-D reconstructions on a variety of workstations.
ABDOMINAL AND PELVIC MR: Fellows will receive extensive training in MR of the liver, kidneys, adrenals, pancreas, and MR of the male and female pelvis.
INTERVENTIONAL PROCEDURES: A large number of solid abdominal organs are biopsied using CT or ultrasound guidance. The Division performs percutaneous lung biopsy and other thoracic interventions. Other non-vascular interventional procedures include percutaneous abscess drainage, percutaneous cholecystostomy, percutaneous Radiofrequency tumor ablation, paracentesis, thoracentesis and sclerosis of hepatic and renal cysts and lymphoceles.
