Director of MRI and the Clinically Applied Body MRI Research Program
PROGRAM: The Department of Radiology, Emory University School of Medicine offers a one-year clinical and translational research fellowship in Body MR Imaging. The Body MRI Program at Emory University is amongst the most clinically active and most technically advanced in the world, with state-of-the-art clinical and research facilities. The fellowship aims to combine excellent clinical training in a variety of abdominopelvic, vascular and pulmonary disease processes with the necessary technical training related to image acquisition and protocol optimization. Dynamically oriented and tailored to an individual applicant's interests and career aspirations, there is protected research time available to allow interested fellows to become further involved with innovative, translational research and education in Body MRI.
FACULTY: The Clinically Applied Body MRI Program is headed by Dr. Diego R. Martin, MD PhD, Professor of Radiology. Dr. Martin is an internationally renowned expert in the field, with multiple grants funding his innovative research. Together with Dr. Bobby Kalb, Assistant Professor of Radiology and the Clinically Applied Body MRI Program, the Body MRI faculty places a strong emphasis on the educational mission, serving as educators for the Body MRI courses through the American College of Radiology. There is also a cadre of physicists, research scientists and engineers that are part of the Body MRI team, serving as valuable resources for the MRI Fellow in the missions of clinical service, education and research.
EQUIPMENT: The Department of Radiology at Emory University has 8 current-generation MRI scanners, running on multiple platforms (Siemens and GE) with latest generation software. Master research agreements in place with manufacturers have made Emory a testing ground for pre-clinical development and translational research. There are additional dedicated research MR scanners present, including a prototype 3T PET-MRI scanner at the newly established Center for Systems Imaging at Emory University.
CLINICAL: The Body MRI Program currently performs ~14,000 clinical body MRI cases/year. There is a large, diverse patient population seen at Emory University, which is a tertiary referral center for much of the Southeast. There is a well-established transplant center (liver, kidney, pancreas and bone marrow) for which MRI has become the principal foundation for diagnostic work-up both pre and postoperatively. Emory University Hospital is a National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center, and there is extensive collaboration with medical, surgical and oncologic teams. There are several weekly multidisciplinary conferences in which MRI is central pillar for supporting optimized patient care planning, including conferences centered on the liver and biliary system, inflammatory bowel disease and pediatrics. There is also an innovative MRI-pathology conference dedicated to review interesting surgical cases and explore imaging-histopathology correlations.
RESEARCH: The research component of the Body MRI Program is heavily translational, and clinical studies are impacted by results from research activities migrating into clinical practice. We have championed patient quality and safety practices through the process of technology development from bench-to-bedside. The Body MRI Fellowship will offer candidates a unique mentorship environment in all areas. For applicants with research interests, this mentorship will be dedicated to cultivating an academic career oriented toward research, education and clinical excellence in Body MRI, providing ample opportunity for scientific investigations and publications that will provide a launching pad for future academic careers. The Body MRI Program is interdisciplinary and interfaces extensively with the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
