Breast Imaging
DIRECTOR: Mary S. Newell MD, Assistant Professor of Radiology
PROGRAM: Emory University offers a 1-year Breast Imaging Fellowship following the revised curriculum put forth by the American College of Radiology/Society of Breast Imaging.
The training curriculum encompasses interpreting Screening and Diagnostic Mammography, performing and interpreting Diagnostic Ultrasound as well as interpreting Screening and Diagnostic Breast MRI. Fellows will become proficient in performing image-guided procedures such as wire localizations for surgery and core biopsies using ultrasound, mammography and MRI. Fellows may also be exposed to and perform Ductography.
As Imaging is the foundation for a Multidisciplinary approach for Breast Care, the fellow will become proficient in patient interaction, as well as in interdisciplinary interaction with Physicians, Nurse Practitioners and Nurses who staff the Surgical, Pathology, Oncology and Radiation Oncology services. Breast Imaging Fellows play a large role and eventually lead the weekly Multidisciplinary Breast Conferences.
The Breast Fellowship involves teaching medical students and residents. Research opportunities are available and encouraged.
FACULTY: Team of five Full time Breast Imagers all who have trained at different programs in the United States.
Division Director: Carl D’Orsi M.D., ACR BIRADS Committee Chairman and Cofounder of the Society of Breast Imaging.
FACILITIES: At the present time rotations are divided between the Winship Cancer Center at Emory’s main campus in Atlanta as well as at the Georgia Cancer Center for Excellence at Grady Memorial Hospital.
EQUIPMENT: Digital as well as Film Screen Mammography, Upright and Prone Stereotactic Biopsy tables, vacuum assisted as well as automated core biopsy devices and dedicated Breast Coil and the ability to perform MRI guided biopsies.
CALL: Breast Fellows have Faculty appointments and presently rotate in the General Diagnostic Call pool with fellows and attendings from the divisions of Breast, Chest and MSK. Frequency of call varies depending on the number of people in the call pool.
AVAILABLE POSITIONS: We are presently full for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 academic terms.
We will be accepting applications for 2010-2011 term beginning September 2008.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must be able to obtain a Georgia Medical License (may be important to graduates of International Medical Programs). Please refer to the Georgia Composite State Board of Medical Examiners for further information: website: http://medicalboard.georgia.gov.
Must be Board Eligible for a Certificate in Diagnostic Radiology having completed an Accredited Radiology Residency prior to start date of fellowship.
