Educational Programs - Residency
Welcome

"Why Emory?"

Presumably you are reading this because you would like to learn more about the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences and our Residency program. Maybe you are considering joining us for a Diagnostic Radiology residency. I think Atlanta, Georgia and the South add many wonderful reasons to be here, but for the purposes of this discussion let's just take that as a given.

This is a special place at a special time.  I think the potential of Emory University is amazing.  This certainly seems true of our department. I would like to share a few highlights on what we offer. Emory is a very collegial and collaborative environment, offering phenomenal case mix and case load, with a supportive School of Medicine and Chair, and dedicated faculty.  It would seem that many of us came here on purpose, from other fine universities and hospital systems to be part of this.  Our department is thriving and that includes our Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program.

To me, the archetypal Emory Diagnostic Radiology resident is very smart and very good at what he or she does, but this is not the first attribute that usually comes across about our residents.  Rather it is their positive attitudes that shine--they are very friendly and constantly on the lookout for ways to help others.  We form a great team, and this is a microcosm of our department in general.

There are immense opportunities for residents here, including: mentorship, teaching, research, public service and volunteerism.  We believe that we have a great place here but we’re always trying to figure out ways to make things better.  I believe strongly in giving our residents the opportunity to lead and help craft and shape their own residency. For example, we have created several committees that are empowered by residents and have also added residents to committees at department, hospital and university levels.  One of our groups created the framework that we use to guide us through the current transition in the curriculum. The system allows us to comply with changes in specific program requirements for Diagnostic Radiology from the ACGME/Radiology RRC.

I could go on and on. If we meet in person, I'd be glad to do so.

This is a special place and this is a special time.

Newly Appointed Chief Residents

Each year, new Chief Residents for our Diagnostic Radiology Residency are selected by a vote of the faculty and residents. Although there are no specific criteria, prior participation in residency program activities and leadership qualities are typical attributes.  Once selected as Chief Residents, these individuals take on numerous duties that include coordinating various resident activities. Other responsibilities are the call schedule and the rotation schedule, plus serving as a liaison between the faculty and residents on a variety of issues. Success as a Chief Resident requires the ability to balance being a peer to and a supervisor of the residents. In addition, these Chief Residents are members of the residency and the Resident Selection Committees.

Over the last year, Chief Residents Keith Herr, MD, Michael Lubarsky, MD, and Ali Tahvildari, MD, contributed a great deal to the success of our program. They helped innumerable residents and faculty, including me, in countless ways.  As they move toward the end of their residency here at Emory, three new Chief Residents have been selected to lead our program: Todd Cramer, MD, Lillian Ivansco, MD, and Andrew Lemmon, MD.  On behalf of Deborah Baumgarten, MD, MPH, Bruce Baumgartner, MD, Ashley Aiken, MD and Chris Ho, MD I want to say thank you and congratulations to all of them.
