Educational Programs - Residency
Research and Extra-clinical Activities

At Emory, resident scholarship is encouraged and promoted through a wide range of opportunities.  Residents can approach any faculty member with ideas for a clinical or educational project.  Many of our residents are get involved in projects of all forms.  Please see the list below for some recent scholarly activities of our radiology residents.

Adopt-a-Resident Grant

A unique educational program has been developed in our department to advance extracurricular pursuits in the field of radiology that may not necessarily fall into the typical mold of clinical or basic science research.  The Adopt-a-Resident Program encourages creative ideas and innovation and it provides residents with funding to bring these ideas to fruition.  Awarded during the R1 year, the grant consists of $10,000 allotted over four years of residency.

Since 2008, our "adopted" residents have embarked on a diverse set of topics that have enhanced the residency program, ranging from global health (with projects in Ethiopia and Nigeria) to improving education technology in our department (including video podcasting of lectures and development of an audience response system.)

Global Health Radiology Elective:

Our unique Global Health Radiology Elective finds its origins in one of our resident’s Adopt-a-Resident project.  Global health training is a burgeoning component of residency programs across many other specialties.  With our Global Health Radiology elective, we hope to promote international humanitarian efforts in radiology and expose residents to the practice of radiology in resource-limited settings.

Through a partnership with the Radiology Department of Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia, we will send a team of one Emory senior resident and one Emory faculty member to Addis Ababa. Our first elective rotation took place in Addis over 4 weeks during March/April 2011.
