Clinical Divisions - Interventional Radiology & Image Guided Medicine

The primary mission of the Division of Interventional Radiology and Image-Guided Medicine at Emory is to provide safe, effective and advanced minimally-invasive treatments to our patients. The division provides cutting-edge treatments to patients with peripheral vascular disease, vascular malformations, venous disease such as deep venous thrombosis, and performs varicose vein and dialysis interventions. Our interventional radiologists help patients with symptomatic uterine fibroids using innovative non-surgical therapies. We provide comprehensive interventional oncologic care for cancers of liver, kidney, lung, and bone at the world-renowned NCI-designated Emory Winship Cancer Institute. The division's faculty members are field leaders, and serve patients from the initial evaluation to treatment through to careful assessment with personalized care. The clinical activities are supplemented by innovative research, particularly in cancer treatments with embolotherapies, radioembolizations and thermoablations and venous diseases with thrombectomy, thrombolysis, and laser. Teaching is a priority and an integral part of the division. There are 8 ACGME fellows per year participating in the dynamic IR fellowship program.

CME Course:  LIVER TRANSPLANTATION, MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH is a new approach to care for patients with liver failure with and without liver cancer. Advancements in medical, surgical and interventional care afford improved patient care, quality and overall outcomes. These new therapies are best served with a multidisciplinary team approach coordinated by a health care team of specialties including: hepatology, transplant surgery, medical oncology, diagnostic radiology, gastroenterology interventional radiology, nurse practitioners and physician assistants involved in the treatment of liver patients. The development of multidisciplinary care teams has been shown to improve the outcome of patients. Click brochure for more details.

Recent Accomplishments

Kevin Kim, MD
Director of Interventional Radiology and Image-guided Medicine
Woodruff Leadership Academy

Dr. Kim has been selected as a Fellow for the 2013 Woodruff Leadership Academy (WLA). Nominations for the WLA were based on a combination of factors, including demonstrated leadership potential, personal accomplishments, and an enthusiastic, ambassador personality - all of which are traits needed to ensure that the 2013 WLA class is a successful one. The WLA has become a national model for leadership development among academic health centers.

2012 SIR Dotter Lecture and Gold Medal
Louis Martin, MD

Dr. Martin was awarded the 2012 SIR Dotter Lecture and Gold Medal. This award honors Dr. Martin's extraordinary contributions to the field, dedicated service to the Society and distinguished career achievements in interventional radiology.  As Honoree,  Dr. Austin delivered a lecture at SIR's Annual Scientific Meeting.

Dr. Martin has been very active in SIR leadership, having served on the FDA Device Forum since 1997 (which he chaired from 2001-2005), the Standards of Practice Committee since 1995 and several other committees for SIR, the American College of Radiology, American Board of Radiology, American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology

Lee Nichols, NP presented Image Guide Medicine and Minimally Invasive Treatments for Cancer: Interventional Oncology at the 3rd Annual Winship Oncology Nursing Symposium

Radiology Research Study Section Committee for RSNA
Kevin Kim, MD
Associate Professor of Radiology,Obstetrics & Gynecology,Hematology & Medical Oncology and Surgery

Dr. Kim has been selected to serve on the Radiology Research Study Section Committee for RSNA. This committee is responsible for evaluating, scoring, and providing written critiques for the Foundation's radiology research grant applications. The RSNA review process is patterned after the NIH grant review process. Study section members prepare written reviews and submit preliminary scores for assigned grant applications, and they attend a study section meeting to discuss and score all Foundation research grant applications.

Associate Editor of the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology,
the official journal of the Society of Interventional Radiology
Louis Martin, MD
Professor of Radiology

According to www.jvir.org, "as the official journal of the Society of Interventional Radiology, JVIR is the peer-reviewed journal of choice for radiologists, cardiologists, vascular surgeons, neurosurgeons, and other clinicians who need current and reliable information on every aspect of vascular and interventional radiology."

Top Atlanta Doctors

Atlanta Magazine named Dr. Curtis Lewis and Dr. Kevin Kim as some of the Atlanta Metro area Top Doctors of Vascular & Interventional Radiology in their June 2012 issue. The doctors were chosen after consulting data gathered by the New York-based research firm Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. The unique selection process allows physicians to nominate other physicians that they feel are clinically outstanding, both regionally and nationally.
